What Happens If You Ignore Tinnitus?
Introduction
That occasional ringing in your ears may seem harmless, especially if it comes and goes. But what happens when the ringing, buzzing, humming or hissing becomes frequent—or never really goes away?
Tinnitus is the perception of sound when there is no external source producing it. It can occur in one or both ears and may sound like ringing, buzzing, roaring, clicking or hissing. While tinnitus is not usually a sign of something serious, persistent tinnitus should not simply be ignored.
In many cases, tinnitus is associated with some degree of hearing loss. It can also be linked to loud-noise exposure, earwax buildup, ear infections, certain medications, head or neck injuries and other underlying conditions.
So, what can happen if you continue to live with tinnitus without getting it evaluated?
1. Tinnitus May Become More Noticeable
For some people, tinnitus is temporary and may eventually improve. For others, it can persist for months or even years.
Ignoring persistent tinnitus doesn’t necessarily mean that it will automatically become worse, but it does mean that an underlying cause may go unidentified. Tinnitus can sometimes be associated with hearing loss, noise exposure, ear infections, earwax or other conditions that may benefit from evaluation.
This is particularly important if you notice that the sound is becoming louder, more frequent or more difficult to ignore.
2. It Can Affect Your Sleep
One of the most frustrating things about tinnitus is how noticeable it can become when everything around you is quiet.
At night, when there are fewer external sounds competing for your attention, the ringing or buzzing may seem much louder. This can make it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep.
Poor sleep can then affect your energy, concentration and mood during the day.
If tinnitus is regularly interfering with your sleep, that’s a good reason to speak with a hearing healthcare professional rather than simply putting up with it.
3. Concentration Can Become More Difficult
Tinnitus doesn’t only affect what you hear—it can also become mentally distracting.
If you’re constantly paying attention to a ringing or buzzing sound, activities that require concentration may become more tiring. Work, studying, reading or even having a conversation can feel more difficult when you’re also trying to ignore a persistent internal sound.
The impact varies from person to person, but tinnitus can affect concentration and everyday quality of life.
4. It Can Affect Your Mood
Persistent tinnitus can be frustrating, especially when you don’t understand why it’s happening.
For some people, ongoing tinnitus can contribute to feelings of stress, anxiety or low mood. The relationship can also work in the opposite direction—stress and emotional distress can make tinnitus feel more intrusive.
The important thing is not to assume that you simply have to “learn to live with it.”
There are management approaches that can reduce the impact of tinnitus, including counselling, behavioural therapies and sound-based approaches.
5. An Underlying Hearing Problem May Go Undetected
This is one of the biggest reasons not to ignore persistent tinnitus.
Tinnitus and hearing loss are strongly associated, although not everyone with hearing loss develops tinnitus.
Sometimes, people don’t realise they have hearing loss because the change happens gradually. Instead, they may first notice ringing in their ears, difficulty following conversations or needing to increase the TV volume.
A hearing evaluation can help determine whether there is an associated hearing loss and provide a clearer picture of what’s happening.
6. Continued Noise Exposure Can Make Things Worse
If your tinnitus started after repeated exposure to loud music, headphones, machinery, concerts or other loud environments, continuing the same exposure without protecting your ears can put your hearing at further risk.
Noise-induced hearing loss can develop gradually, meaning you may not notice the damage immediately. Repeated exposure to loud sounds can permanently damage hearing, and tinnitus can occur alongside noise-induced hearing loss.
Simple precautions can help:
- Keep headphone and earbud volumes at a safe level.
- Take regular breaks from prolonged headphone use.
- Move away from very loud environments when possible.
- Use appropriate hearing protection around loud machinery or at noisy events.
- Have your hearing checked if you notice changes.
7. You May Miss a Treatable Cause
Not every case of tinnitus has a simple or identifiable cause. However, some causes can be addressed.
For example, tinnitus may be associated with earwax buildup, an ear infection or certain medications. Other cases may be related to hearing loss or conditions affecting the inner ear.
An evaluation can help determine whether there is an identifiable cause and what should be done next.
When Should You Get Tinnitus Checked?
You don’t necessarily need to panic every time you experience a brief ringing sound. However, it is worth seeking professional advice if tinnitus is:
- Regular or constant
- Becoming worse
- Affecting your sleep
- Affecting your concentration
- Making you feel anxious or distressed
- Associated with hearing difficulties
The NHS specifically recommends seeking medical advice when tinnitus is regular or constant, getting worse, or affecting sleep, concentration or emotional wellbeing.
Some symptoms require more urgent attention
If tinnitus occurs alongside sudden hearing loss, significant dizziness/vertigo, facial weakness or after a head injury, prompt medical assessment is important. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is considered a medical emergency because delaying evaluation and appropriate treatment can reduce the chance of recovery.
Similarly, tinnitus that beats in time with your pulse should be medically evaluated.

Can Tinnitus Be Treated?
There isn’t currently one universal cure for tinnitus, but that doesn’t mean nothing can be done.
Treatment and management depend on the underlying cause and how tinnitus affects the individual. Depending on the situation, approaches may include treating an underlying ear problem, sound therapy, counselling or behavioural therapy. Hearing aids can also be useful for people who have tinnitus alongside hearing loss.
The goal isn’t always to completely eliminate the sound. In many cases, the focus is on reducing how noticeable and disruptive tinnitus is and addressing any associated hearing problems.
Don’t Let Tinnitus Become Something You Simply “Put Up With”
Tinnitus can be temporary and harmless in some situations, but persistent tinnitus deserves attention—particularly when it is affecting your everyday life.
Getting your hearing evaluated can help identify whether hearing loss or another underlying issue may be contributing to the tinnitus. It can also help you understand your options for managing the symptoms.
If you’ve been experiencing persistent ringing, buzzing or other unexplained sounds in your ears, don’t wait until it starts affecting your sleep, concentration or quality of life.
Eljay Hearing Centre provides hearing evaluations and hearing-care services across Chennai.
